Ikeja Computer village is one of the largest commercial center for phone traders in West Africa, and a lot of stolen phones are been offered for sale in this same market. These criminal activities have dented the image of this community, and with the help of the unified database, sales of stolen devices will soon stop.

In collaboration with a software company, the Computer and Allied Product Dealers Association of Nigeria (CAPDAN), a trade association of Ikeja Computer Village market traders, has developed a web portal which enables the tracking of stolen phones. All traders are expected to register every buyer who purchases any item from them (especially mobile phones) on the web portal.

The last one year in computer village witnessed a rise in the sales of stolen smartphones and fake accessories, hence, creating the unified database web portal became necessary - says CAPDAN.

Mr. Adeniyi Ojikutu, the CAPDAN President, said:
“In the event that a mobile phone was stolen and returned to the market for sale, the trader could quickly log on to the portal to verify if the phone was stolen. If verified that it was a stolen phone, the trader would quickly alert the real owner and the police would be invited for necessary prosecution,”

Furthermore, he added, “We are already using all means at our disposal to advise all customers to the Computer Village to always insist on registering their mobile phones with Fonreg, immediately they are purchased.”

Confirming the development, Mr. Ayo Thomas, the Chief Executive Officer, Fonreg, said that the portal would be unveiled this month (June) to create further awareness. According to him, traders at the market have welcomed the initiative. “Over 200 traders have already registered on the portal,” he said, adding that more awareness campaign would continue in order to bring all the traders on the web portal.

  2. Bribery and corruption will ruin this. Once they offer the traders a certain percentage of money from the sales of the phone, they'll comply.
