Huawei Finally Pulls Out From Low-End Smartphone Production

Huawei, a brand name many Nigerians find difficult to pronounce has made a great announcement. The world’s 3rd largest OEM and China's highest smartphone maker said it's company bade goodbye to low-end smartphones.
Huawei Pulls Out Fron Low-End Smartphone Production

A low-end device is such that lacks premium features, and Huawei is pulling out from that production line, in order to boost sales and profits. The company opted-in for mid-range and upper-range smartphone productions, also stating reasons for it. According to Huawei:
We are giving up the very low-end devices because the margin in this is extremely low, and it’s not making enough profit for us.

Companies like HTC, Blackberry and Apple had already given up production of low-end smartphones. In 2014, Huawei earlier announced a cut in production of low-end devices, and now, the brand has followed through on the logical path following that move.

Google CEO Pichai Hits Nigeria: Ready to Train 100,000 and Launch Range of Products

In a company conference held in Lagos on Thursday, Sundar Pichai, the chief executive officer of Google Incorporated has said his firm would prepare 10 million Africans for ‘jobs of the future’ in the next five years.
Google CEO Pichai Hits Nigeria: Ready to Train 100,000 Nigerian Software Developers, Launches Range of Products

The pledge will see the idea Google launched in April 2016 to train young Africans in digital skills extended. Having also announced in March that the company had reached its initial target of training one million people.

Google Inc further disclosed that a combination of physical and online training would be offered in Swahili, Hausa and Zulu languages, where at least 40 percent of people trained will be women.

“Nigerians have to write software for the local economy and we have a program to train over 100,000 software developers in Nigeria,” Mr. Pichai.

A $20 million commitment was also pledged by the company to assist nonprofit organisations in Africa in the next five years. Google announced plans to provide more than $3 million in equity-free funding, mentorship and working space access to more than 60 African start-ups over three years.

New range of products, such as:
  • Posts with Google,
  • Gboard,
  • Google Street View,
  • Launchpad Accelerator and
  • YouTube Go,
were launched by the giant tech conpany in Africa, starting with Nigeria at the event.

Posts with Google, a product that allows up-to-date posts from verified people, places or things appear directly in search results is now launched in Nigeria, making her the third country in the world (after the United States and Brazil) to have the application.

“Museums, sports teams, sports leagues, and movies in the US, and all of the above plus musicians in Brazil and Nigeria are the only ones with access to the new product, however experimentation is ongoing in other regions of the world," a statement by Google read.

The Gboard, another product from Google is a keyboard specially designed to make it easy to type in Nigerian languages like Igbo, Hausa and Yoruba with the proper alphabets readily available. Google also unveiled an improved search engine capable of saving 90 percent data, which is five times faster with faster web pages from search results.

Google Street View enables users to view any location in the world in a video form from their devices.

“Google maps are just as relevant to a user in Lagos as it is in London. You can view the streets of Lagos from the comfort of your couch,” Suhen Ruhela of Google Maps said.

According to Johanna Wright, vice president of YouTube, YouTube Go was being tested in Nigeria as of June, and the trial version of the app will be offered globally later this year.

Youtube Go allows users to save videos for offline viewing, giving file size and quality options so you'll know how much data a download will consume. This will help save data and browse faster, as statistics reveals Nigerian internet speed is slow compared to countries in the Middle East.
average internet speed in Africa and middle east

The company says it was built on four pillars, “it is relatable, connected, cost effective and Social. YouTube Go will give users control over the videos they love,”

Also speaking, Google Country Director for Nigeria, Juliet Ehimuan Chiazor, said Nigeria ranked number one among African users and the eighth in the world.

A live performance by popular Nigerian musician, Adekunle Gold thrilled guests, and the presentation of a plaque to Popular Nigerian YouTube personality, Mark Angel Comedy for hitting one million subscribers on his YouTube account as side attractions at the event.

Airtel Boasts Of Highest Data Subscribers, 9Mobile and Glo Loses A lot

Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) dicslosed that in June this year, the internet users and data subscribers in Nigeria's telecommunications networks slightly increased by 33,747 new users.
Airtel Boosts Of Highest Data Subscribers, 9Mobile and Glo Loses A lot

Telco networks like 9Mobile - formerly called Etisalat, - and Glo didn't add any value to the increment, as reports revealed that Airtel and MTN gained more internet subscribers during the month, while Glo and 9mobile lost so many of them.

NCC Monthly Internet Subscribers Data revealed the total number of internet users in the month of May were 91,565,010, which increased by 33,747 to 91, 598,757 in June.

MTN, which played a huge roll in the increment by revamping some data plans and in many other ways increased its data subscribers to 31,691,070 from 31,406,441 in May, accounting for 284, 629 new users.

Globacom, who has the cheapest data plans lost 218,482 internet users probably due to poor network conditions. Thereby having just 27,184,002 data subscribers remaining on its network in June, against 27,402,484 internet users they had in May.

Airtel network, which had 19,912,661 in May, gained the most with 261, 428 new internet users. The telco now have 20,174,089 internet users. Congrats!

9mobile, the financially troubled network, formerly known as Etisalat had 12,843,424 internet users in May, but the telco now have 12,549,596 users in June. This shows that 293,828 data subscribers left the network, recording the highest lost.

Countless number of time, we've urged Glo to improve her network, and 9Mobile to increase her data plan value which is the poorest in the country. But it all fell on deaf ears. Now the result is clear!

Hurray! WhatsApp Now Has One Billion Active Daily Users

A big CONGRATULATIONS goes to WhatsApp for reaching a new milestone today, by having 1 billion active daily users.

As at last year, this popular messaging app, WhatsApp had 1 Billion 'monthly' active users. But they have recorded a tremendous growth. Now Whatsapp have one billion active daily users. This the company disclosed in a blog post, also stating that its monthly active user base has increased to 1.3 billion.
WhatsApp Now Has One Billion Active Daily Users

Additionally, almost 55 billion messages are sent every day in 60 supported languages. 1 billion Videos are also shared daily on this platforn, and photos shared has increased to 4.5 billion.

Excerpt from Whatsapp blog post:
"Just last year, we shared that one billion people around the world use WhatsApp every month. Today, we are excited and proud to share that one billion people around the world use WhatsApp every day to stay in touch with their family and friends."

However, Whatsapp's traffic is little compared to Facebook. FB announced back in June that her monthly users is around 2 billion, with its messenger app accomodating over 1.2 billion monthly users as of April. On the other hand, in June, Instagram announced it has 250 million daily active users, while Snapchat announced 166 million daily active users back in May.

I wonder who in Nigeria is not using WhatsApp.

Fair Usage Policy: Why Airtel Unlimited Data Plans Have 3 Different Prices

Airtel recently launched her unlimited data plan, but it left people asking a lot of questions due to incomplete informations about the plan by the telcos.
Fair Usage Policy: Why Airtel Unlimited Data Plan Has 3 Different Prices

AIRTEL UNLIMITED DATA PACKAGES

  • N10,000 Unlimited Packages / 30 days Validity.
  • N15,000 Unlimited Packages / 30 days Validity.
  • N20,000 Unlimited Packages / 30 days Validity.

As you can see, Airtel unlimited data plans comes with 3 different price tags, but all with the same 30-days validity. People asked why the expiring date for the N10,000 plan is same with the N15,000 and N20,000 plans. And a lot of Techpaddicts also enquired about what differenciated the 10k unlimited package from that of 15k and 20k.

Now, Techpaded has officially confirmed that the reason for the different price segregations of the Airtel 3G unlimited data plan is speed throttling & speed difference.

Unlimited 10 : full 3G speed up to 40GB usage, then throttled
Unlimited 15: full 3G speed up to 65GB usage, then throttled
Unlimited 20: full 3G speed up to 100GB usage, then throttled

In simple words, speed/bandwidth throttling means limiting how fast you can access something on the internet. So if you opt-in for the package with higher price, you'll get faster connection and delayed throttling. Airtel further disclosed the throttle speed is 256 kbps till expiry. Full 3G speeds here mean you should expect speeds in the vicinity of 1-4 Mbps on good days and less then 1 Mbps on bad days.
