A new feature is set to be released by popular social network, Facebook, which is dubbed "Crisis Response." This will act as the heart for all of the company’s safety-related tools, which includes the Safety Check, a feature that enables Facebook users to tell friends and family that they are safe during terrorist attacks, natural disasters, and other dangerous incidents.
Facebook Crisis Response feature will also consist of mix of posts, news articles, photos and videos which would bring people to the know of any crisis. For coordinating help and to support individuals or groups affected during a disaster or crisis, the company is introducing the Community Help and fund-raining feature.
The Safety Check is inarguably Facebook’s first and most widely known feature in the Crisis Response area. It was launched in 2014, but it was first widely deployed during the 2015 Nepal earthquake. This feature help users to quickly and easily mark themselves alive and alright in the midst of the chaos of an attack or natural disaster. Now, Safety Check can be automatically activated by an influx of user posts and a confirmation from a third-party news or government source.
In the past, Safety Check also encountered some setbacks. Like there was a time when it was triggered by a false alarm in Thailand, where a bunch of firecrackers were mistaken as a bomb. But despite these setbacks, Safety Check has emerged as a defining feature of Facebook’s community-driven mission.
Safety check and other Facebook safety-related tools are seen as a rare technological reassurance for victims of any number of the world’s crises, which are now more prominently shared on social media. Now that it is under a new centralized hub in Crisis Response, it will likely continue to be seen more as such.
