The latest Face ID security which Apple has been boasting about, has reportedly been thwarted with a mask. The Californian based OEM introduced Face ID in the iPhone X as a replacement for Touch ID, since the phone's design couldn't accommodate a front-mounted fingerprint scanner, and the company doesn’t want it positioned at the back.
Apple claims that Face ID is so secure that the odds of a random person using their face to break into someone's iPhone X is one in one million. But a security firm called Bkav has been able to trick and bypass Apple Face ID security.
Materials like silicone was employed for the nose, and 3D printing was used on other areas of the mask. Bkav stressed that Apple is relying too much on the feature's Artificial Intelligence.
Making the mask costs $150, and the security firm says the mask could be used to learn personal secrets from political leaders, business executives and billionaires, since it is able to break into the iPhone X.
Bkav has released a video showing how the mask beats iPhone X's Face ID, but not all details were disclosed. The firm says that is because their experiment is a proof of concept whose purpose is to prove a principle.
They further stated that facial recognition is not a good security tool and that when it comes to biometrics, a fingerprint scanner is the best way to keep intruders from breaking into your phone.
Apple is yet to make a comment on this.
