Android Oreo Go Edition is Here for Low-End Smartphones

Google is pushing further its support for low-end smartphones with its recent announcement of Android Go, which is the latest version of Android Oreo. It’s a lighter version of the Android OS aimed at devices with poor memory specs like 512MB or 1GB RAM.

Just as we learnt that Android 8.1 will improve storage space, this new Android Oreo (Go edition) will be paired with it, and it is set to be released tomorrow. Android Go is built mainly to work with Oreo operating system, Google apps and the Play Store.

This new system collects features of Android O, and optimises them to work on a lower-end device. An average app runs 15% faster and pre-installed apps takes 50% less space on Android Go. It also manages background apps so well and even auto turn on data saver by default.

To further help you save more data, there's an "optimized for your device" section on Play Store for Android Go which shows you if there's a lighter version of any app you wish to download. For instance, if you want to download Facebook or Twitter, this new system will recommend and highlight Facebook Lite or Twitter lite.

Nine lite and memory-friendly applications will be pre-installed in the Android Go edition. They include:
  1. Google Go
  2. Google Assistant Go
  3. YouTube Go
  4. Google Maps Go
  5. Gmail Go
  6. Gboard
  7. Google Play
  8. Chrome
  9. Files Go

Chrome users will also enjoy another data saving feature, as all commands in the browser—before getting to your phone—will pass through a Google server which reduces file size.
