Konga to Stop Payment on Delivery, Sacks Over 300 Workers

Is the recession in the country still hitting hard on Konga? The popular online shopping website has reportedly given marching orders to over 60% of it employees. Though, news of Konga sacking workers is not new, since its inception in 2012, they do this almost every 6 months. But this is so far the highest number of people laid off in the company's history.

As learnt from Quartz, Konga's CEO, Shola Adekoya informed staff of the cuts on the 30th of November and said the company will adopt a leaner business model”. He also confirmed that he's going nowhere, despite words on the street that founding ex-CEO, Sim Shagaya may be returning to his role from which stepped down almost 2 years ago.

Konga to Stop Pay on Delivery

In a recent medium post, Shola Adekoya hinted at an “internal restructuring,” where he also announced that Konga will stop Pay on Delivery (PoD) model, and shift to prepay-only. He further stressed that “we have explored several solutions for payment and e-commerce in Nigeria and concluded that prepay is a necessary approach for our business and the market."

To some extent, that's a good decision, because PoD has its own risks and challenges. We heard the news of a Jumia agent who was killed in Port-Harcourt, and all goods with him were stolen. Also, the cost of inflation, as well as the resulting level of order cancellations on the platform were among the reason the CEO made this decision.

Merchant Woes

Last year ending report showed Konga has over 10,000 individual merchants—which they collect commissions on sales from. Now the e-commerce website will end their warehousing service for these merchants, and they'll also start paying 'rental fee' for listed products on Konga. Konga is not smiling oh!
