OLX Runs Away From Nigeria, Ghana and Kenya

I thought the NBS said Nigeria has excited recession last year, but a lot of businesses keeps folding up; including Efritin—an online market place who packed up last year, Konga which was recently acquired and now, OLX is set to stop operation not just in Nigeria, but also Ghana and Kenya.

OLX is a popular global market place with brick and mortar buildings in over 40 countries. The company is well-known for allowing users to buy and sell both old and new stuffs. But after 8 years of operating, all that's left is just the building.

Following reports by TechPoint, Naspers—a Multinational media group and investor (in MultiChoice and Konga also) has closed all offices in Africa which includes Ghana, Nigeria and Kenya; sparing only one in South Africa. Worker in these affected offices has been put in the know and expected to vacate by March ending this year.

OLX CEO in Asia, Middle East and Africa made confirmation that the company has indeed been shut down in Nigeria, but Kenya and Ghana weren't mentioned.

"We made a difficult but important decision in Nigeria to consolidate our operations between some of our offices internationally.

Our marketplace will continue to operate here — uninterrupted — as it has since 2010, and we remain committed to the many people here who use our platform to buy and sell every month. We continue to be focused on constantly innovating to make sure that OLX remains the top classifieds platform in the country.

Of course, we are committed to helping our affected colleagues during this transition and have already offered them meaningful financial and other support. As we’ve expressed to them directly, we are extremely grateful for their many significant contributions to OLX’s success."

On the other hand, this is good news to Jiji; they are now the number one online market place in Nigeria, as their rival—OLX is packing up.
