New Improvements Added to WhatsApp Change Number Feature

A new update is now available for WhatsApp beta users, as the company has added couple of improvements to the Change Number feature which they plan to make available on the Android, iOS and Windows app platforms.

new update and features on WhatsApp change number

The Change Number feature allows you to change the phone number associated with your WhatsApp account on the same phone. Before now, your contacts won't be informed that you changed your number (only group members), but thanks to this update, WhatsApp now allows you notify contacts about you having a new phone number.

If you change your WhatsApp number, it migrates the data on your old number to the new one, preserving your chat history and automatically adds you to the groups you joined before the change in number; the groups members will also be notified of your new number. Additionally, this latest update has added three new options that enables you to notify all contacts, contacts that you've chatted with, or selected contacts, about you changing your number.

This is a really good improvement to the Change Number feature, as it will save users time and kill the stress of having to inform your contacts one after the other of your new number; since you can now notify all of them at once.

Checkout New Improvements Added to WhatsApp Change Number Feature

To access this new Change Number feature, go to WhatsApp Settings > Account > Change number. Now, tap the Next button from the top-right corner, enter your old and new phone numbers, hit the Next button again, and then enable the Notify my contacts option.

Who you can Notify About Your Changed WhatsApp Number

  • Group members (default);
  • All your contacts;
  • Contacts you've chatted with;
  • Custom, i.e., particular contacts you select.

The update and feature has started rolling out to WhatsApp beta v2.18.97 which is up for download via Google Play store for Android. Hopefully, it'll be available for iOS and Windows phone users in a future date. In similar news, WhatsApp recently added the option to transfer money via QR codes, with Advanced GIF Search and Sticker Search features set to roll out soon, too.

Goodbye to Google URL Shortening Service goo.gl

Google URL shortening service was first launched in 2009 by Google, and has grown to be one of the most popular link shrinkers in the world, helping people to easily share more links and measure traffic online. Unfortunately, it's time to say good bye to the popular goo.gl, as the tech giant has ended support for it.

Goodbye to Google URL shortening service goo.gl

Google announced this news in a blog post few days ago, and they left a short reminder on the goo.gl console also. Beginning from the 13th of April, new and anonymous users won't be able to shorten links using this service anymore. While users who have existing goo.gl short links can continue using goo.gl until March 30, 2019, when it will be completely discontinue by Google. In addition, all previously shortened links won't stop working.

Starting March 30, 2018, we will be turning down support for goo.gl URL shortener. From April 13, 2018 only existing users will be able to create short links on the goo.gl console. You will be able to view your analytics data and download your short link information in csv format for up to one year, until March 30, 2019, when we will discontinue goo.gl. Previously created links will continue to redirect to their intended destination. Please see this blog post open_in_new for more details.

Google is ending support for its URL shortening service in favor of Firebase Dynamic Links, which are single links that can lead to different destinations depending on the type of device they're accessed from. According to the company:
“To refocus our efforts, we're turning down support for goo.gl over the coming weeks and replacing it with Firebase Dynamic Links (FDL). FDLs are smart URLs that allow you to send existing and potential users to any location within an iOS, Android or web app. We're excited to grow and improve the product going forward.”

Google also recommended other popular services like breakers like Bitly and Ow.ly as an alternative to the doomed goo.gl.

Face Unlock, Password, Fingerprint ID, and PIN: The Good and Bad

Hi dear, today we'll be talking about the four most used methods of securing a smartphone device, which are PIN, Password, Fingerprint and Face ID; and reasons a lot of people use one instead of the other. I remember one of my first Samsung phones which I used during pre-teen (I had a feature phone then, chuckles). I was the PIN-happy type and I changed them like every 2 days. Unfortunately I did it one night then slept off, only to wake up and find out i had totally forgotten the PIN, even after cracking every cell in my brain.

pin lock

I'm not sure if there was an option to retrieve PIN then, nor perform a hard-reset if the phone was off; so that utterly marked the end of that phone. But things have changed now, Android phones are encrypted by default, providing multiple methods for locking and unlocking them. So let's make a 'simple' review on the various means to safeguard a smartphone, pointing out their merits and disadvantages.

PIN Code

This is one of the simplest and oldest ways to lock and unlock a phone using numbers, standing as a simple alternative to a password. A strong PIN code can be difficult to remember, but easier to enter than a password, and Android allows PINs of up to 16 digits, which equates to 10 quadrillion combinations.

However, judging from what I've seen, a lot of people use their phone numbers, short codes like 1234 or 5555, and date of birth as PINs which makes it easy for friends and family to guess, input and have access to your data. Also, odds are high that if someone take a quick glance at your PIN (probably when you are typing it), he/she can completely memorize it.

Meanwhile, PIN lock is helpful in a situation where you forget your phone at home or you're charging it away from home, but you really need something in it (maybe phone number, etc.). It happened to me once so I simply telephoned my sister through my other feature phone (which I use for phone calls and SMS), and I told her my PIN which she used to unlock my phone, then she sent me what I needed. Hadn't been I was using pattern lock, fingerprint or Face ID, that would have been impossible.

Pattern Lock

patterns lock
With this, you have to draw a pattern on a grid of nine dots and join at least four or them horizontally, vertically, or diagonally. This security method became popular when Android touchscreen phones came out.

Pattern lock is easy to use, simple and likely predictable. Navigate to your settings and make the lines invincible when drawing it so your neighbor won't be able to cram it, and draw the patterns really fast. One way I use to guess friends pattern is to turn off their phone screen and stare at it very well until I see shades of the lines on the blank screen.

Kids love playing with patterns by drawing wrong random lines which will trigger the system to permanently lock your phone till you provide some information to unlock it back. I recommend using it only if you don’t have a fingerprint ID scanner and you dislike PIN codes.

Password

Similar to PIN lock, but this time with combination of alphabets (lowercase and uppercase), symbols and digits. It should contain a minimum of six characters, and a randomly generated long password is a secure way to lock a phone.

Nowadays, a lot of people use names of their lovers which makes it a little bit hard, but password lock shares almost the same pros and cons with PIN lock. A strong password should have a mixture of text, symbol and digits; or better yet a passphrase which will make it almost impossible to crack, thereby your phone is kept secured.

Fingerprint ID

fingerprint id
The chance of 2 people having the exact same fingerprint is one in 64 billion, thus, fingerprint ID has become the preferred unlock method for many. A fingerprint scanner is now mounted on so many phones nowadays, some on the back, in the home button and under the display just like Vivo X20 Plus UD.

It is fast and secure. Even if your cut or bruise your finger, your smartphone will still be unlocked thanks to the sub-epidermal and fingerprint gestures technology. You can't guess a fingerprint pattern like you can guess a password, and you can't also misplace it.

However, the scanner can sometimes be tricked by a mold of a person's finger, and worst is that a criminal could even cut off somebody's finger to get past a scanner security system. To cap it off, if somebody steals your fingerprints then you're doomed for life; because unlike PINs and password which you can easily change, you cannot change your finger print.

Face ID Recognition

With this, you can unlock your smartphone with just a glance. This feature is available mostly on high-end phone, where it works even if you change your haircut, grow/shave your beards, and use makeup - like the recently launched Xiaomi Mi Mix 2S

However, sometimes last year, it was reported that a mask broke the iPhone X face ID security which is really bad because the face ID can be used to confirm payments.

So far, what is the most secured unlock technology, and which do you presently use? Kindly share this post and drop a comment down below.

Google Acquires Popular GIF Search Engine Tenor

Google has made several improvements to its image search engine over the past few years; including the recently released Google Lens which allows users search any image from his/her Google Photos library on the web. But it's always not the same story when trying to find animated GIFs on Google, even if you add "GIF" as a keyword to your search, a lot of still images will end up showing. However, the search giant has made a good move which will fix all of this soon.

Google buys GIF search engine Tenor

Yesterday, Google acquired Tenor—a popular GIF search engine that has a vast database of animated images that sees over 12 billion searches a month, the company claims. It's worth noting that Facebook also uses this platform to let users easily search and share animated GIFs in Messenger.

With their deep library of content, Tenor surfaces the right GIFs in the moment so you can find the one that matches your mood. Tenor will help us do this more effectively in Google Images as well as other products that use GIFs, like Gboard.

Thanks to Tenor's acquisition by Google, we should expect many improvements not only for Google image search engine, but for other products like Gboard, etc. Tenor will keep running as a separate brand under Google, thus, there should be more animated GIFs in the future for you to share, whether you use Tenor keyboard or any of the numerous Google services and mobile apps.

Huawei Sets to Launch Phone with 512GB Storage; Bye to Memory Cards

A lot of debates and arguments have been going on over whether external SD card should still be in use in smartphones, and it seems Huawei is also against the motion with the latest report that its upcoming handset will feature 512GB of storage - external storage obviously won't be needed in this.

The handset which was spotted on Chinese regulation agency—TENAA with model number NEO-AL00, comes with 6GB of RAM and 512GB of storage; a spec that is mostly seen on laptops and computers.

The 512GB native storage on this device Huawei is prepping is two times the 256GB on iPhone X, so whatever the latter does, the former will do better. With this, you can download the Facebook app (400MB) more than 1,200 times. It will also be useful for recording 4K video, since every three minutes of 4K footage consumes 1GB.

Other specifications about this unannounced phone are still in the dark, but its price will certainly be high and it'll likely come as a rebranded Huawei Mate 10 Pro. While Huawei is set to launch the flagship P20 series by March 27th, there is no information yet on the launch date of this.

The yet-to-be-announced Samsung Galaxy J7 Prime 2 appeared for a short time on the company's official website before it was pulled down, a move which proves that the phone is truly in the making, and Samsung is set to release it soon. The Galaxy J7 Prime 2 stands as an upgrade to the Galaxy J7 Prime that was launched back in 2016. The former sports a 5.5-inch full HD (1080p) display with Corning Gorilla Glass protective coating against screen cracks and scratches.

In terms of performance, Samsung Galaxy J7 Prime 2 comes with 3GB of RAM and 32GB inbuilt storage which can further be expanded via MicroSD card. The handset is powered by an octa-core Exynos 7 processor, and it runs Android Nougat out of the box - quite disappointing though. The price of the Samsung Galaxy J2 Prime 2 may vary in different countries, but it appears to cost Rs 13,990 in India, which is about $215 in the US, and approximately ₦77000 in Nigeria.

Telegram Hits new Milestone of 200 Million Monthly Active Users

Telegram has reached a huge milestone, as the popular instant messenger announced that its app now has 200 million monthly active users. The Co-Founder of Telegram, Pavel Durov, made this known in a blog post where he expressed his gratitude to users for helping the platform hit this “insane number.” To cap off this landmark, Telegram also released an update on the Android and iOS versions of the app.

Telegram Hits new Milestone of 200 Million Monthly Active Users

While Telegram is the closest rival to WhatsApp, the former is still far behind the facebook-owned company (which has 1.5 billion MAU) when it comes to traffic, but Telegram unarguably boasts of more features than WhatsApp.

Meanwhile, Durov further stressed that Telegram has not-for-once been sponsored by advertisers. He said "Unlike other popular apps, Telegram doesn’t have shareholders or advertisers to report to. We don’t do deals with marketers, data miners or government agencies.” It's also worth noting that Telegram was the first messaging app to roll out end-to-end encryption, and since its inception in 2013, no user's private data has ever been shared with third parties.

New Features Update

Courtsey of this new update for Telegram's Android and iOS platforms, new improvements like multiple picture sending, auto-night mode, and enhanced functionality for stickers which now allows you to use the new search for sticker sets option, has been added.

In addition, you can now send and receive multiple images on Telegram. The Auto-Night mode is not new to Android users; the feature has been previously released on that platform, but thanks to this update, iOS users can now also automatically switch to the dark version of the interface.

Furthermore, Telegram for iPhones and iPads now has different text styles in media captions, an option to report individual messages in public entities, a new page where you can manage connected websites, and a optimised battery usage.

There'll be no Other Phone Like HTC U12+ Launched This Year

It has been widely reported that HTC will launch only one high-end smartphone this year. The Taiwan-based brand released HTC U11 and the U11+ which were its two high-end flagships in 2017, but the number of units sold were lower than expected. So the company may be using a new strategy this year 2018.

As reported by HTC Source, the upcoming HTC U12+ will be released as the company's only flagship phone with high-end specs this year, while the regular HTC U12 model may never be introduced. Instead, HTC is allegedly planning to launch U12 Life which will be an affordable mid-range handset, just like they did in 2017 with HTC U11 Life.

HTC U12+ will likely be available for purchase in so many regions, including the U.S. in early May. The cost of this phone is, however, still sketchy, but following the same source, it will come with a competitive price tag of about $700 – $800 which is as much as a Samsung Galaxy S9 and the improved Galaxy S9+.

Highlights of some high-end features of the yet-to-be-announced HTC U12+ includes a 6" Quad HD+ display, dual cameras setup at the front and back, 6GB of RAM plus up to 128GB of internal memory, along with a Qualcomm Snapdragon 845 processor under the hood.

You can Actually get 10GB Data for Just ₦2000 on 9Mobile

When talking about cheap or affordable data plans and bundles, 9Mobile is arguably not the best option; they even came last in our recent ranking of best data networks. However, this fourth largest telco network in Nigeria does come up with some surprising data plans from time to time, and they can actually give you 10gb of data for just ₦2000 for a month, it's just not 'official.'

how to activate 9mobile 10gb for ₦2000

Sometimes ago, 9Mobile released a plan that offers ₦200 for 1gb data subcription, which is fast, doesn't zap, and most importantly cheap. The data is valid for 3 days, it is still working, and the best part of it is that you can resubscribe again once it expires.

With this, you can activate 5GB of data for just ₦1000 which will last for 15 days when you re-subscribe to this plan five times, and you can also get a whooping 10GB data for ₦2000 for 30days on 9Mobile network by repeating the steps on a double.

All you have to do is to subscribe again anytime the 1gb data finishes, and you'll be given another 1GB at N200. So, in a month, you'd have gotten and used 10gb of data for just 2k. Remember, even the grand masters of data–Glo offers just 4.5gb for 2000, so this is the best.

Anyways, this is not new; a lot of people have been rocking it for a long time, while you might just hearing about it. To get started, simply dial *929*10# to activate this plan, and *228# to check your balance. Meanwhile, if 9Mobile network service is poor in your area, you can go for Ntel Wawu SIM which offers free 10GB data after purchase.

Kindly share and tell us take on this using the comment box below.

9 Facts you Need to Know About TStv Sassy Decoder

After going silent for a long time, TSTV is breaking the internet again with the launch of its new Sassy decoder. It is set to go on sale from April 1st, and as the date is fast approaching, a lot of people have been asking for the features, channels, subscription, bouquet packages, internet data, etc., of TSTV Sassy decoder.

TSTV sassy decoder features

First of all, it's important to note that TStv now has two set of decoders, which are Dexterity and Sassy. Here are 9 things you need to know about the TStv Sassy decoder.
  1. TSTV Sassy decoder will cost ₦3500, coming with the dish and remote.
  2. Sassy decoder has up to 70+ Channel
  3. TStv Sassy decoder comes with the Pause subscription feature.
  4. You can pause your subscription for only seven days, thus, you get 7 days grace period after your sub has expired.
  5. Pause Subscription is only available for 1 month subscription plan
  6. The Sassy decoder comes with PVR Function to record videos and play later; you won't miss your favorite programmes/shows with this.
  7. TSTV daily subscription fee cost just ₦200, 3 days subscription is priced at ₦500, and weekly subscription goes for ₦750.
  8. You can pay for your TSTV Sassy Decoder subscription plan using Quickteller platform
  9. TSTV Sassy decoder is not internet enabled, hence, you won’t be getting the free 20GB promised.

It's now clear that TSTV Sassy Decoder is the downgraded version of TSTV Dexterity decoder. The latter is the one that comes with 200+ channels and free 20gb data, but it won't be on sale for now - though, they've kept on postponing the date for its commercial sale since last year.

TStv Sassy is a Pay as you Go (PAYG) operated decoder, but i'm not sure it can compete with the market leaders—DStv and GOtv, as the last time I checked, Grandsport 4 which should allow you watch live Laliga football matches and other sports has been removed from the website.

Kindly stayed glued for more updates on TSTB Sassy decoder. Feel free to share this post and subscribe to our newsletter below.
