Facebook to Release Unsend Feature to all Messenger Users

The recent Cambridge Analytica scandal has left Facebook pouring in tons of new features and improvements in a bid to protect users. The social media giant is now working to make the unsend feature available to everyone on the Messenger platform, which will allow users retract their messages.

Facebook to make Unsend feature available to all Messenger users

As reported by TechCrunch, Facebook has been using this feature to revoke messages sent by Mark Zuckerberg and other executives from their recipients' inboxes, while normal users couldn't do so on messenger.
We have discussed this feature several times. And people using our secret message feature in the encrypted version of Messenger have the ability to set a timer — and have their messages automatically deleted. We will now be making a broader delete message feature available. This may take some time. And until this feature is ready, we will no longer be deleting any executives’ messages. We should have done this sooner — and we’re sorry that we did not.

Apparently, the reason Facebook allowed CEO Zuckerberg and other executives to “unsend” their messages was to protect their communications after cyberbullies gained unauthorized access to Sony Pictures' emails four years ago. In addition, FB added a change, dubbed “limiting the retention period for Mark's messages in Messenger,” which would automatically delete his messages after a certain period of time.

Now, a lot of users are requesting that the ability to “unsend” messages should be available not just to executives, but to everyone, and the good news is that Facebook has released a statement that confirms the feature will be available to all Messenger users in a future date.

By the way, it's worth noting that Facebook executives have now adopted the use of the “Secret” conversation function, instead of the Unsend option.
