Back in February, Facebook announced that it was working on a new “downvote” button that will allow users flag and get rid of negative or hate comments on the platform. Now, the social media giant has released the feature along with an “upvote” button too which works like that on Reddit, and it has started rolling out fast to a number of users.
The downvote feature was introduced so users can flag what Facebook calls “bad comments,” and they hope people don't misuse it. Clicking the downvote button hides the comment for the user who taps it, with additional options of “offensive”, “misleading”, or “off topic” shown to the user to report. By the way, it's important to note that this isn't a dislike button and it shouldn't be used to signify disagreement, but to remove comments with bad intentions and disrespect.
It will take time for Facebook to change the mentality of users towards this button, especially as the dislike button has been on many users’ wishlist since the the company introduced its “like” button in February 2009. The “upvote button” on the other hand is used to point out “helpful or insightful” comments. Majority of users in Australia and Zealand already have access to the upvote and downvote features, hopefully, it will be released to other countries.
