Just few days ago, we talked about reports of Instagram being set to increase the video length on its platform to 60 minutes with monetization options, and yes! It is absolutely true.

The popular video/photo sharing platform has announced a new feature—after hitting 1 billion monthly active users—called Instagram television (IGTV). The Facebook-owned company is set to rival YouTube with this latest addition, as anyone will be able to upload videos for Instagram’s new IGTV section, which will be displayed vertically in full-screen, the way a phone is normally held.

Instagram Television will display contents from users who you already follow on their account, and you can have both the regular Instagram app and Instagram Television installed on your device. IGTV comes as a seperate mobile application on iOS and Android, where videos will start playing automatically when the app opens.

The most interesting part is that you can upload or watch videos up to an hour long on Instagram TV, as video length on IGTV has been increased from 60 seconds to 60 minutes. You can also swipe up to discover more content creators, switch between “For You,” “Following,” “Popular” and “Continue Watching” all on the same screen. In addition, there is a like, comment and share button that let's you send videos to friends in Direct.

How to Create and Watch Instagram Television Channels

Just like normal Television has channels, in IGTV, the creators are the channels. When you follow a creator on Instagram, their IGTV channel will show up for you to watch. Anyone can be a creator simply by uploading your own IGTV videos in the app or web platform to start your own channel.

IGTV Content, Adverts and Monetization

As of the time of this writing, all contents on the IGTV app are free and with no advertisement. But according to Instagram, users will be able to monetize their videos—in the future—if it gets popular and trending.
