Good news for Nigerians as Google has decided that it will provide free Wi-Fi facilities in about 200 sites in 6 states in Nigeria from now till 2019. The 6 states that would have these faci3lities are Lagos, Oyo, Rivers, Enugu, Abuja and Kaduna.

It is estimated that within the time period of building these facilities about 10 million Nigerians will benefit. The project is handled in partnership with 21st Century, a leading Internet Service Provider in Lagos. On Wednesday, four Google stations went live at the local airport, Landmark, The palms and Ikeja City Mall.

This initiative by Google has been carried out also in other countries like Thailand, India, Indonesia and Mexico.

These Google stations allow Google partners to provide Wi-Fi hotspots that are available to the public. Nigeria was chosen as part of the countries to enjoy these benefits because Google intends to target countries where the next-billion internet users are set to come from.

The Wi-Fi hotspots are also fortified so that there are no security breaches.

The display type is super AMOLED, measuring 10.5 inches at 2560×1600 pixels resolution. The Galaxy Tab S4 also runs Android 8.1 Oreo pre-loaded and has 13MP and 8MP cameras on the back and front respectively. The only setback with this device is that it does not have the fingerprint scanner.

Durability Test: The Oppo Find X Phone is a Beautiful FAILURE!

The Oppo Find X was launched in the month of June, with one of the highlights being its absolutely innovative design. The phone sports a large 6.42-inch AMOLED display, with 19:5:9 aspect ratio and Corning Gorilla Glass 5 screen protection. However, the death of this device seems to be its durability.

Thanks to the Gorilla Glass 5 protected AMOLED screen and glass back, the Oppo Find X does a pretty good job when it comes to fighting scratches. The news and reports of a foldable smartphone has been going round for quite a long time now. But Samsung has finally disclosed that it will be unveiling one early next year, and it has already been dubbed “winner” according to a tip-off by the Wall Street Journal.

The same source goes further to provide us with the rumored specs for the phone: It is expected that this foldable device will sport a folding screen of 7 inches when opened fully, where the screen can also be completely folded in two. Unlike the ZTE Axon M which actually folds but uses hinges, the technology used in this Samsung model is expected to be different from that of the former which makes analyst believe that the phone will be priced at around $1,500.

Samsung will likely first produce the phones in small quantities to see how it would be welcomed in the market. Many are still skeptical about this new foldable phone to be unveiled by Samsung.

It is a shame though that some users have issues with their cameras.

There are also rumors about a mysterious Pocophone. The Xperia XA2 Plus seems like the modified version of the XA2 Ultra. The changes noticed in the new device include the presence of a new 18:9 aspect ratio display, which makes the XA2 Plus not as long or wide as its predecessor.

Another change is in the design as the XA2 Plus sports an aluminum build compared to the plastic build of XA2 Ultra. The back camera for the two phones is the same; a powerful 23MP camera. The front facing camera for the XA2 Plus, however, seems to have suffered a downgrade as its single 8MP camera cannot stand against the dual camera on the XA2 Ultra.

Meanwhile, the two phones are identical on the inside: Sony Xperia XA2 Plus is powered with Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 630, coupled with 4GB or 6GB of RAM and internal storage options of 32GB or 64GB which is expandable with the use of an SD card.

The XA2 Plus runs on Android 8.0 Oreo and uses a 3,580 mAh battery with quick charge 3.0 support to keep the lights on. The price of the phone is still unknown, although it is set for release in August in Europe.

HMD Global is believed to have plans to release a new Snapdragon 845-powered flagship and a high-end device that run Snapdragon 710 processor under the hood. But there appears to be another smartphone set to be introduced by the Finnish company according to a recent FCC filing.

The FCC filing shows documents that revealed some information about this new phone. From the screenshot of the filing we know that the model number of the phone is TA-1120 with code-name “Bravo”; and it also appears that the phone will come with 32GB of internal storage, run pre-loaded Android 8.1 Oreo and also have a 16:9 display aspect ratio - which suggests it'll be a budget device.

Furthermore, according to listing, it is also noted that the device supports Bluetooth, Wi-Fi and LTE. There is no NFC chip as this could be an attempt to reduce the cost of the phone.

Not much is known about how HMD would choose to brand this phone, but we do know that the phone is targeted towards the Latin American region and would also include dual-SIM support.

HTC made headlines recently as the phone company confirmed that it would be making the “world’s first major blockchain phone.” This phone is said to allow users to own their digital identity and is reported to cost around $1,000.

The phone dubbed “Exodus” is still covered in a lot of mystery as we only have a blueprint drawing of this device. HTC has said that it is expected to release the phone before the end of this year and that more details will be provided in the 3rd quarter of this year.

A new position was even created at HTC called the Chief Crypto Officer, and the new CCO did have a lot to say about the upcoming device.

The CCO mentioned that the phone is an attempt to make data as secure and protected as they are in the blockchain. In summary the essence of the phone is: “We envision a phone where you hold your own keys, you own your own identity and data, and your phone is the hub.”

Many consider this phone by HTC as an attempt to bring the company back to its glory days. We cannot say for sure, but this phone does sound like one that has a targeted population in mind already. As a big player in the Indian mobile market, Samsung is expecting the revenue from India to keep increasing, and in order to be able to supply when the demand for their phones come, they have decided to open the world’s largest smartphone factory in India.

Based in the city of Noida, this 35 acres plant has the potential to produce twice the amount of Samsung’s output once it is fully functional. This means that the plant could manufacture 120 million units of phones as against the 60 million units it is currently producing.

Samsung estimates that it would take about 3 years before the plant reaches its full potential. This expansion is good for the community as Samsung is expected to employ about 5,000 new people.

The type of phones that would be produced at the plant are not yet confirmed, but it is expected that it is the low-end phones because these ones have chosen to be very popular in India.

Over 9000 Subscribers Port out of Glo; What About MTN? Shocking!

5 years ago, the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) introduced an initiative in the form of Mobile Network Portability (MNP) which allowed subscribers to migrate from one network to the other—just in case they needed better service—while still maintaining their previous phone numbers.

62,709 Subscribers Ported to Other Networks so far

However, this initiative has been met with just little success as statistics from the NCC show that only 62,709 subscribers have ported to other networks from January to May of this year. The stats further show that 33,772 subscribers left their network and 33,437 moved to other new networks on this same 5 months period.

MTN gained more subscribers and at the same time, they also lost more with 12,965 subscribers coming in and 6,614 going out;
Globacom got 3,283 and lost 9,453 users;
9Mobile got 8,984 and lost 9,526;
Airtel got 8,205 subscribers and lost 8,259.

Many Nigerian prefer to totally dump their old SIMs instead of porting to a new network; and that is why this initiative hasn't blossom since all these year.

If you use any Multichoice services especially DSTV, then you most probably would not like this news. Multichoice has decided to up their subscription prices yet again. The new rates are expected to take effect from the 1st of August on both the DSTV and GoTV decoder packages.

Meanwhile, there is good news for the GoTV users as the subscription for the GoTV Max is reduced from N3,800 to N3,200. The prices of the other packages remain the same.

DSTV subscribers on the other hand will experience an increase on all the packages. There would be a price increase from N1,900 to N2,000 on DSTV Access, N3,800 to N4,000 on Family, N6,300 to N6,800 on Compact, N9,900 to N10,650 on Compact Plus, and N14,700 to N15,800 on the Premium package.

The increase of package prices is something that multichoice has been doing for a while now, much to the annoyance of subscribers. Formally, the N9,900 Compact Plus that is set to be increased to N10,650 used to be N7,800.
