MTN, GLO. Airtel and Etisalat Loses 5.6 Million Subscribers in 30days

Did 5.6million Nigerians abandoned their phones, is the recession this hard to hit 5.6 million subscribers? These, and more questions we are bound to ask because telcos losing 5.6million subscribers within a period of 30days is just abnormal, and shouldn't be taken with levity hands.

March subscribers data released by NCC reveals that Telcos lost 1.66 million subscribers generally and the newly released subscribers data for April shows that Telcos lost 5.6 million subscribers in April.

According to the data, active mobile voice subscriptions in Nigeria crashed from 154.4 million in March to
149.2 million at the end of April this year. GSM companies, including MTN, Globacom, Airtel and Etisalat, were responsible for the decline.

Analysis shows that across all the four categories of subscribers, such as GSM, the code division multiple access (CDMA) and fixed wired/wireless operators, as well as Voice Over Internet protocol (VoIP), only GSM segment was responsible for the crash in the subscriber base. The GSM operators’ active customers
decreased by 3.2 million on the 151.9 million subscribers recorded in March .

MTN, which had 58.1 million users in April, lost 2.2 million subscribers. Glo had 37.2 million customers, but lost 58,727 subscribers. Airtel stood third with 34.3 million subscribers, lost 319,803, and Etisalat had 19 million customers, lost 576,120 subscribers.

The CDMA operators had 217,566 (Visafone had 213,106 customers, while Multi- Links had 4,460) users in April, which was same with the result for March.
The only thing that increased was landline users using Visafone and Multi link with 1,304 users. And 21st Century network had 102,304 customers in April, recording an increase of 1,559 users on its March record of 100,745.

That's why I commend Airtel telcos network for introducing packages like the 20X recharge bonus which will entice people to start using their already dumped SIM card. In the same vein, I condemn MTN for increasing price of their services, and I'm certain the price increment of Goodybag bundles made them lose the highest number of subscribers.

Recession which led to crime also has a hand in this loss. Many phones are now being stolen everyday, and so many victims couldn't afford to retrieve their lines talk-less of buying a new phone. What do you have to say about this?
