News have been going round since the early dates of this month over the refusal by the Nigerian industry regulators to renew MultiChoice's operating license which will lead to the shut down of DSTV and GOtv in June 2019 when the current license expires.
Going by reports, the license which was issued back in 2014 won't be renewed because it's not in line with the Digital Switch Over (DSO) White Paper. However, the South African originated company—MultiChoice has finally spoken up concerning this matter, saying it complies with the regulatory requirements and applicable laws on TV broadcasting.
According to MultiChoice:
“GOtv is provided under a fully licenced and registered entity in Nigeria, and this license comes up for renewal in March 2019" the statement reads.
"As a law-abiding and committed Nigerian operator which has fulfilled (and continues to comply with) all regulatory requirements and applicable laws, it is not clear how or why this license would not be renewed, and as such the company will investigate further in the best interests of the many customers it serves in the market" it further says."
The statement was concluded with:
"MultiChoice remains committed to providing its customers with a wide variety of quality entertainment through the usual best standards."
MultiChoice is now a very big name in Nigeria since its inception in 1994, to the launch of DSTV, a direct broadcast satellite service for the Sub-Saharan African market in 1995; and a cheaper version of the PayTV in 2011, dubbed GOtv.
