According to the statistics pit forward by the telco regulator—NCC, MTN is still having the upper hand with 36.2% market share and 51.4million subscribers as at last year ending. Globacom takes the second spot with 26.4% market share and 37 million subscribers, while Airtel is hot on their heels controlling 25.3% of the market portion (just 1.1% short of Glo's) with 35.9 million subscribers. 9mobile has 12.03% market share with 17 million subscribers.

The 155 million subscribers available at the beginning of the year accompanied a teledensity of 110%. But within 365 days, a lot of subscribers dropped their telephone lines. An analyst suggests that the rise in use of Over-The-Top platforms like WhatsApp, Telegram, Skype, Facebook, etc., also contributed to the fall in the number of users of our telcos mobile services. That's why they want NCC to block OTT services in Nigeria.
