Mark Zuckerberg on Facebook Data Scandal: “We Don't Deserve to Serve you”

Facebook has been under fire in the past few days following word that Cambridge Analytica—a firm linked to Trump's 2016 campaign was able to target 50 million Facebook users through non-consensual access to their profiles. Facebook's CEO Mark Zuckerberg has finally spoken up about this scandal, admitting that the social media giant made mistakes.

Facebook's Zuckerberg on Cambridge Analytica:

According to reports, Aleksandr Kogan, a Russian-American Cambridge University professor was first able to collect the FB users data by falsely promising that he would use them for research only, but which he then gave to Cambridge Analytica. The CEO of the company, Alexander Nix, was suspended after being captured by a hidden camera telling undercover reporters how he can damage the reputation of politicians using dirty tricks. He also claimed to have been responsible for Trump's upset victory in the U.S. presidential election two years ago.

Besides admitting his fault, Facebook's Zuckerberg also introduced a three point plan to ensure the privacy and safety of subscribers personal data.
  1. The launch of an investigation that will thoroughly scrutinize all apps with access to user data.
  2. Apps will now be restricted to obtaining a person's name, email address, and profile picture only.
  3. Facebook will adopt a tool that will let users to see which apps can access their data. With this, the subscriber will be able to stop access and prevent any app that he/she selects, from retrieving personal information.

"We have a responsibility to protect your data, and if we can't then we don't deserve to serve you. I've been working to understand exactly what happened and how to make sure this doesn't happen again. The good news is that the most important actions to prevent this from happening again today we have already taken years ago. But we also made mistakes, there's more to do, and we need to step up and do it."

"This was a breach of trust between Kogan, Cambridge Analytica and Facebook. But it was also a breach of trust between Facebook and the people who share their data with us and expect us to protect it. We need to fix that."-Mark Zuckerberg, CEO, Facebook

A 2011 Consent Decree signed by Facebook states that Facebook users personal data may not be used in any way without their permission. The company may have breached this after they discovered, but didn't alert users that Cambridge Analytica was using their data in 2015; the FTC is now investigating it.

In related news, WhatsApp co-founder Brian Acton has also joined the "delete facebook" movement.
