While Nigerians are complaining that data meant for a month only last for few days, the National Consumer Commission (NCC) for South Africa has made it clear that data bundles in S.A. must have a minimum expiry period of three years.
Sometimes last year, the industry regulator in Nigeria did something similar, but less protractive, by mandating all telecom operators in the country; MTN, Airtel, Glo and 9Mobile, to provide extra 14 days grace period to subscribers after data expiration. However, no brand, as of the time of writing, has followed this directive because no one expects 1.5GB data to last for 44 days.
For NCC South Africa to think of extending data validity to 3 years, then their data plans must be really great. Meanwhile, some other persons are of the opinion that data bundle should be extended to 90 days. My little research shows that MTN SA 1GB of data costs 69 Rands, but that's approximately N2000 in Nigeria - don't forget the situation with Naira,though.
Participants at the hearing totally disagreed with this, willing to drag the matter to court. The NCC also accepted the suggestion to seek a High Court ruling on this legislation before it is implemented in regulation.
