Telcos Will Pay ₦500,000 Once They Violate This Directive

Before the Nigerian Communications Commission introduced Do Not Disturb (DND) in Nigeria back in 2016, our telcos has been giving us one hell of a headache through their unsolicited text messages. You might be expecting a credit alert, then you hear your SMS ringtone only to check and see “Get relationship tips, dating secrets and many more for ₦100 daily, reply YES to activate.” Are you kidding me?

Telcos Will Pay ₦500,000 Once They Violate This Directive

NCC issued a directive that all telecom operators, including MTN, Airtel, Glo, Etisalat (now 9Mobile) should provide their subscribers with the 2442 short code to opt out of the unsolicited advertorial SMS - which they did starting from July 1, 2016. As at December 2017, 10 million subscribers had activated DND.

However, it seemed the industry regulator didn't follow-up with the effectiveness of this directive, as network carriers still find a way to bombard subscribers with these unsolicited messages. This got to a point that the National Association of Telecommunications Subscribers (NATCOMS) made a public complain.

Now, the NCC has issued a final warning to operators who still send unwanted messages, stating they'll be fined half a million naira if they don't stop. At the 83rd edition of the Telecom Consumer Parliament (TCP), a spokesperson of the NCC Mr Philip Eretan, warned that any telco violating the DND directive will be charged ₦500,000.

At last, we can finally get rid of unlimited text messages once and for all in this country. If you are yet to opt-in to the Do Not Disturb zone, simply send STOP to 2442.
