According to the New York Times, Mark Zuckerberg, the founder of Facebook, is the genius behind everything. It is a personal project of his. Mark went on to say that it was the beginning of a "long process."
The merger would enable Facebook users to communicate directly with those who only have Instagram or WhatsApp accounts when it is completed. Since there is no common core between the applications, this is currently impossible.
The work to combine these three messaging services is already underway, according to a source, and it is anticipated that it will be finished by the end of 2019 or early 2020.
According to four people involved in the work, the messaging services will continue to operate on their own platforms for the time being, but their underlying technical infrastructure will be unified. That will allow people to communicate across platforms for the first time by bringing together three of the largest messaging networks in the world, each of which has more than 2.6 billion users.
