They all want 9Mobile NG because it's the fourth largest network operator in Nigeria, but they've seen it is not an easy catch. After the telco defaulted on a $12.2 billion loan and their parent company in Abu Dhabi backed out, 16 firm immediately submitted expression of interest to acquire the brand.
We learnt from our previous post that 10 of the 16 bidding firms cruised to the next stage after passing the technical evaluation bid stage, while the other 6 were dropped. The next stage was for the selected 10 to submit their financial bids, and now, the result is out.
Now, there are only 5 bidders left, but in the coming weeks, one of them will eventually emerge as the sole bidder who will now take ownership of 9Mobile NG—which has over 17 million active subscribers.
We have familiar names on the list: Airtel, Glo and Smile. They are also top network providers in Nigeria. If any one of them luckily lands as the sole bidder for 9Mobile NG, it'll be a big boost to their own firm and to existing 9mobile subscribers.
9Mobile has lost approximately 3 million subscribers as her total number of users dropped to 17.1 million with a 12.2 percent market share, from 20 million subscribers with a 14 percent share earlier this year.
