MTN Super-fast 5G Trial Clocks 20Gbps Download Speed

We haven't gotten enough of 4G, but MTN has gone ahead and carried out trial for 5G technology and its applications, which poses as the first to be done in Africa. It was conducted at the company's head office Johannesburg, South Africa.

The trial was executed in partnership with Ericsson—an industry leader in electrical safety products, and it is part of their planned 5G demonstration. MTN further stated the tests will lead to the commercial deployment of 5G technologies in the near future.

MTN reached a milestone by achieving a bandwidth of over 20Gbps with less than 5ms latency in the 5G trial, which is the highest achieved on a mobile network in Africa. Th telecommunication giant was given a temporary licence for 800MHz of spectrum in the 15GHz band to conduct its 5G trials.

Besides the super fast browsing speed 5G network provides, the technology, noted by MTN South Africa CTIO, offers a new world of potential for Africa.

According to Giovanni Chiarelli: “With 5G, remote healthcare through connected robots could offer world-class surgery in the most remote parts of the continent and the world. Self-driving cars could change the face of road safety, along with smart agriculture, smart mining, and smart cities.”

To facilitate this, manufacturers are already working on smartphones compatible with 5G network. Very soon, 4G/LTE will be old school, but before thinking about that, we need the capacity that comes with additional spectrum for 5G.
