GoodBye to WiFi, as LiFi Produces Internet Connectivity Through LED Light

Sooner rather than later, the light bulb in our homes will work as a source of internet connectivity, and this shows us the rate at which technology is evolving. Philips Lighting, a Netherlands-based company, has unveiled its LiFi technology which is a high quality LED lighting that provides broadband Internet connection through light waves.

This is the first global lighting company to offer LiFi-enabled luminaires from its existing office lighting portfolio. Unlike Wi-Fi which makes use of radio waves to transmit data, LiFi is a two-way, high-speed wireless technology that uses light waves to perform the same task. A broadband connection with a speed of 30Mbps is provided by the Lighting’s office luminaires which is enabled with LiFi technology, and this is done without compromising the light quality.

The way LiFi technology works is amazing: it has each luminaire equipped with a built-in modem that modulates the light at speeds that is not predictable to the human eye. The light is then detected by the LiFi USB key/dongle plugged into the socket of a laptop or tablet.

Through an infrared link, the LiFi USB dongle returns data to the luminaire. Thus, double quality and a robust connection is achieved, as LiFi has 10,000 times the spectrum of WiFi. The company is offering LiFi-enabled Philips PowerBalance gen2 and Philips LuxSpace downlight luminaires.

According to Philips Lighting, LiFi technology offers benefits over WiFi as it can be used in places where there may be interference between radio frequencies and equipment, or where WiFi signals cannot be reached or are poor. It also comes handy in environments demanding high security, as light cannot pass through solid walls, and a line-of-sight to the light is needed to access the network, thus an extra layer of security is added.
