Google app Gets “Your People” Feature in new Version 8.0 Update

A new update is now available for Google app, which bumps the version from 7.0 to 8.0 and comes with a newly added page, dubbed “Your People.” It features as a way for Google Assistant users to set up a link between nicknames and relationships to people in their contacts. In essence, this functionality lets you “Tell your Assistant who’s who,” as you can say call or text "Dad" and the virtual assistant will make the call or send a text to the correct number.

Furthermore, “Your People” will apparently be able to remember and remind you of the birthday of a linked nickname and relationship. The feature is already visible on the new Google version 8.0 app, but it is currently not functional as at the time of this writing. However, you can still make a connection between your contact's nickname/relationship in just 5 steps:
  1. Open the Google app Google Search.
  2. Tap Microphone Speak or say "Ok Google," then say a nickname for one of your contacts. For example, "Diane is my mom."
  3. If you have two or more contacts with the same first name, pick the right person.
  4. Under "Remember a relationship," tap Done Done.
  5. After the nickname is added, you can contact them by saying things like "Text my sister" or "Email my mom."

Here are some valid monikers that can be used:
  • Mother/Mom/Mama/Mum
  • Father/Dad/Daddy
  • Brother
  • Sister
  • Partner
  • Grandfather/Grandpa/Granddad
  • Grandmother/Grandma
  • Wife
  • Husband
  • Son
  • Daughter
  • Niece
  • Nephew
  • Uncle
  • Aunt
  • Cousin
  • Assistant
  • Manager/Boss
  • Girlfriend
  • Boyfriend

To access the "Your People" page, go to the Google Assistant settings, click on Personal info, then tap Your People. You also have the option to remove contacts in Your People at any time. Do this by simply telling Google something like "John is not my boss," then the contact will now appear, just tap on Done under "Remove nickname." There will be more information once the feature goes live.

In addition, there are some other codes in this newly updated Google app 8.0 which hints that more features could be added in the future. Thanks to one of them, it appears that Google Lens may may start working with front-facing camera(s), while another code string suggests that Google will allow users to set up custom routines to go off based on a schedule.

We should also expect to see Google Assistant on a smart display show video of the news, and not be limited to audio. Additionally, Lite Mode feature which enables simplified search results, and the ability to browse the web using 80% less data may be removed.
