Less Than 5% of Devices run Android Oreo According to Google

The most recent and official Android distribution numbers for the month of April has just been announced by Google. The focus on these numbers is mostly on Oreo, and apparently, it performed even lower than Nougat did during the same period last year.

Google's April distribution numbers confirm Android Oreo market share is on the rise

In December 2017, just 0.5% of devices were running Android Oreo, then the number grew in February 2018 when Android Oreo market share was barely above 1%. Now, this latest Android distribution numbers for April shows that close to 5% of the devices out there have adopted Oreo. This is still not a figure to boast of, considering that Android P is close at hand.

When it comes to market share, this is not the first time a new Android version is performing poorly - even after almost a year of the official announcement. Marshmallow and Nougat also had similar slow adoption rate, and consumers should be used to it by now. The Android 7.0 Nougat OS had 4.5% market share as at April last year, while Android 8.0 Oreo is currently on 4.1% of devices.

April Android Distribution Numbers

  • Android Gingerbread - 0.3%
  • Android Ice Cream Sandwich – 0.4%
  • Android Jelly Bean – 4.5%
  • Android Kit Kat – 10.5%
  • Android Lollipop – 22.9%
  • Android Marshmallow – 26.0%
  • Android Nougat – 30.8%
  • Android Oreo – 4.6%

We should also take into consideration, the fact that a lot of smartphone manufacturers like LG, Motorola, Honor, and HTC haven't launched their flagships yet; which could be one of the possible reasons for the small Oreo number. The image (above) holds the distribution numbers of other versions of Android, speaking of which Lollipop, KitKat and JellyBean had significant drops in their market share percentages, whereas there was increment in Nougat's numbers.
