WhatsApp has released a new payment feature to its popular instant messenger for users in India early this month, which provides a faster and more efficient way to send and receive money to/from friends. Hopefully, there will be a wider roll-out to other African countries—including Nigeria—in the nearest future.
WhatsApp Pay is built on UPI which enables users to send and receive money easily. Thanks to this new feature, users can now link their bank and WhatsApp account together using the Unified Payments Interface (UPI), then begin making payments straight to another user’s bank account through a WhatsApp chat.
To access this payment feature, simply click on the attachment button located next to the camera icon in a WhatsApp chat, there you will see the payment option along with others such as audio, gallery, video, etc. Once you tap on it, you'll be presented with a list of banks where you can now choose the one you operate and verify it before being allowed to make transaction.
While Nigerian banks are gaining millions of Naira from transaction-based fees with ATM, USSD and Mobile banking charges at the expense of its customers, WhatsApp Payment feature will liberate us from this, as one will be able to easily make charge-free payments directly from his/her WhatsApp application.
