Bloggers, you Need to Register your Blog With $900 or Shut Down!

You may literally be laughing out when you read the title, but this is really happening in Tanzania πŸ‡ΉπŸ‡Ώ. The government in that African country, on Monday, ordered all unregistered bloggers and online forums to shut down their websites immediately or faces criminal prosecution.

Bloggers, what is you Need to Register your Blog With $900 or Shut Down?

According to reports by Reuters, a lot of the popular sites and online discussion forum in the country have temporarily shut down, as critics slammed the directive as an intention to tighten control of internet content.

Earlier in March 2018, The Tanzania Communications Regulatory Authority (TCRA) mandated all those who publish content online, including bloggers and operators of YouTube channels, to register with the government. The application license costs up to $900 (equivalent to N324,000), whereas Per capita income in Tanzania is slightly below $900 a year.

In addition, online content publishers are further compelled to pay an initial license fee of 1 million shillings ($440), and an annual license fee of another 1 million shillings. Failure to do this will land such blogger or YouTuber in serious trouble, as anyone caught violating the new regulations will face a fine of at least 5 million shillings ($2,200), imprisonment for a minimum 12 months, or both.

This is another weird move made by the government of an Africa nation. Few days ago, the Uganda πŸ‡ΊπŸ‡¬ Gov't mandated all WhatsApp Group admins to register their groups or face prosecution, and many other unbelievable rules. Is this the right way to tackle hate speeches? And how will you handle this if it happens in Nigeria πŸ‡³πŸ‡¬?
