You may get Arrested if you Don't Register your WhatsApp Group now

You may get arrested if you don't register your WhatsApp group – one of the weirdest headlines, but you read it right. Interestingly, this is coming just few days after the Ugandan Govt passed into law a 200 shillings (N20) tax for using social media.

Register Your WhatsApp Group or Risk Being Arrested

Now, another battle against social media is happening in Zambia, as the government has mandated all WhatsApp group administrators in the country to register the groups and set up codes of ethics or risk being arrested if there is a breach. This rule has been pased into law, and was announced on Thursday by Zambia Information and Communications Technology (ZICTA) boss Mofyta Chisala, a move the masses akin to be an effort by the Zambian government to control free speech.

According to Chisala, “We are coming up with a law where now every administrator must be registered so that he can put ethics or codes of conduct for anyone who is going to be on that blog because at the end of the day, we are going to arrest that person who created the WhatsApp group or the editor or co-odinator of the blog and that should not be the end game.”

As an admin of a WhatsApp group, you should be able to regulate what is posted in your group. Zambia is not technologically advanced enough to track the whosoever posts a offensive message, so the admin will be held responsible.

The next WhatsApp update should add a lot of group features, including the ability for administrators to from members from posting. At the meantime, the WhatsApp group call feature is now rolling out, while some admin super powers are now live.

We hope these rules doesn't come near Nigeria.
