How to Add a Shortcut to a Website on Your Desktop Using Internet Explorer, Chrome, or Firefox

Do you want to open your favorite websites faster? When you save a link to a webpage to the desktop of your Windows PC or Mac, you can open websites without having to type in long URLs or browse through bookmarks. We'll show you how to add an icon for a website shortcut to your desktop in the shortest amount of time.

  1. Start the web browser. This approach is applicable to Firefox, Chrome, and Internet Explorer as well.
  2. Because Microsoft Edge does not support this feature, you will need to launch Internet Explorer in order to accomplish this.
  3. Regardless of your default browser, the shortcut you create will typically open in that browser.
  4. Go to the website to which you want to add a shortcut. Open the website that you want to use as a shortcut. You can create a shortcut to any website, but if the site normally requires you to log in, you may still be prompted to do so.
  5. Check that the browser is not set to full screen. In order for this to work smoothly, you'll need to be able to see your desktop.
  6. In the address bar, click and drag the icon of the website. As you drag, the object's outline will appear.
  7. Let go of the desktop icon. The website's title will appear as the name of a shortcut to the website. If the website has an icon, the shortcut will use that icon.
  8. Click the shortcut twice. Running the shortcut will always open it in Internet Explorer if you created it with Internet Explorer. It will open in your default browser if you used Firefox.
