In a Zoom meeting, do you want to conceal your cluttered workspace from others? There is still a simple way to protect your privacy and avoid potentially embarrassing situations even if you don't want to use a virtual background like the beach or outer space. On all platforms, you can now easily blur your Zoom background to make your surroundings appear so hazy that people and things disappear. Learn how to blur your background in Zoom on your PC, Mac, phone, tablet, and Chromebook with the help of this TechPad article.

  1. Open the desktop app for Zoom. To blur your background, you can use the Zoom desktop application for Windows, macOS, or Linux.
  2. Are you currently on a phone call? On an active call, panelists can quickly blur their background by selecting Blur My Background and clicking the up arrow next to the "Stop Video" or "Start Video" buttons.
  3. Install Zoom. You may not be able to blur your background if the Zoom app hasn't been updated recently. Running the update takes about the same amount of time as checking for updates:
  4. At the top right, click your profile picture or initials.
  5. Select "Confirm for updates."
  6. Click Install if an update is available. You will not need to restart Zoom because the update will be installed quickly.
  7. Click your initial or profile picture. It is located in the Zoom app's top-right corner.
  8. From the menu, choose Settings. This brings up all of your preferences for Zoom.
  9. Select the Effects & Background tab. It will be visible in the left panel. This may be referred to as Background & Filters on some versions.
  10. Select the tab for Virtual Backgrounds. Click Virtual Backgrounds beneath your video preview to immediately switch to this tab in the right panel if you are not already there.
  11. You will need to enable Virtual Backgrounds for your account if you do not see Virtual Backgrounds. You will be able to use other cool background effects and blur your background once you enable Virtual Backgrounds and restart the Zoom app.
  12. Select "Blur" Your camera preview will show that your background will instantly blur, but your face will remain clear and prominent.
  13. The following are three easy ways to look good on Zoom:
  14. Join a meeting on Zoom. Now that you've arrived at your meeting, your background will be hazy.
  15. Until you go back to your Virtual Backgrounds settings and select None (or select another background image), your background will remain blurry for any and all subsequent Zoom meetings.
