Analytics Predicts Samsung's First Ever Fall in Global Market Share in 2018

Samsung is gradually losing grounds as competition stiffens in all categories and regions of the smartphone industry. Despite its strong arm this year courtesy of some successful products, it has been predicted by Strategy Analytics that the Korean manufacturer will fall short in next year's market share.

Samsung

An estimated 20.5% share of the smartphone market will go to Samsung this year, thanks to 2017 models like Samsung Galaxy S8, the Galaxy S8 Plus and Galaxy Note 8. But that figure may drop to 19.2% by next year, considering the massive influx of Chinese OEMs into the market.

Samsung is being rivalled by Apple on the high-end, with the latter's flagship iPhone X carrying a price tag of $999 to $1,149. While thousands of Chinese manufacturers are releasing budget price handsets, thus, posing as a challenge to Samsung on the low-end.

If we should go by the Strategy Analytics without including year 2016, 2018 will see the first year-over-year decline in Samsung's smartphone shipments ever. The Samsung Galaxy Note 7 catastrophic explosions—caused by bad batteries—took place in 2016, making that year a total black out. Thogh, Samsung Galaxy Note FE was later released this year as the Renovated Note 7.

"While the iOS-powered smartphones do not have competitors, Samsung will face tougher challenges in the Android segment."-Park Nam-gyoo, professor of business, Seoul National University.

By next year 2018, 315 million smartphones are expected to be shipped by Samsung; and that's a good figure for a global market share leader of 19.2%.

Apple will likely climb back to second spot after Huawei overthrew them in the past summer smartphone sales, with an estimated 234 million iPhone units shipments next year, which is copacetic for 14.3% of the world-wide smartphone market next.

Huawei will slip back to third position in 2018 with 10% market share, followed by fellow Chinese manufacturers—Oppo with 7.8% of the smartphone market world-wide. Please note these figures are based on approximate calculations from Strategy Analytics for next year as we've earlier stated above.
