How to Search for Images by Text

By uploading an image to a search engine like Google Image Search, TinEye, or Bing Visual Search, this TechPad teaches you how to search the internet. When you search by image, you can see where the image appears online and look for images that are visually similar to one another.

  • On your computer, mobile device, or tablet, visit an image search website. Any modern search engine will allow you to search for images by name, subject, or keyword. Google Image Search (https://images.google.com) and Bing Images (https://www.bing.com/images) are the most frequently used options.
  • In the search bar, enter your search terms. On Google Image Search, it is in the middle of the page, while on Bing, it is at the top of the page. Be specific about your search objectives.
  • If you want to find an orange tabby cat, for instance, search for "orange tabby cat" rather than just "tabby cat."
  • To search, click the magnifying glass. It will appear a list of images that match your search terms.
  • In both search engines, some suggested alternative searches will be displayed above the results. You can get more specific results by clicking on any of these searches.
  • To view an image, click on it. This displays the image in greater detail as well as a larger version.
  • Click Visit or the website's name in Google or View Image in Bing to see a larger version.
  • Optional: Download the image. Keep in mind that images are frequently protected by copyright, so it may not be possible to use them for commercial purposes without violating copyright.
  • Right-click the image, select Save Image or Save Image As, give the file a name, and then click Save to download it to your computer.
  • Tap and hold the image to download it to a phone or tablet, then select the saving option.
