This is How Sales of Stolen Phones Will End in Computer Village

Ikeja Computer village is one of the largest commercial center for phone traders in West Africa, and a lot of stolen phones are been offered for sale in this same market. These criminal activities have dented the image of this community, and with the help of the unified database, sales of stolen devices will soon stop.
This is How Sales of Stolen Phones Will End in Computer Village

In collaboration with a software company, the Computer and Allied Product Dealers Association of Nigeria (CAPDAN), a trade association of Ikeja Computer Village market traders, has developed a web portal which enables the tracking of stolen phones. All traders are expected to register every buyer who purchases any item from them (especially mobile phones) on the web portal.

The last one year in computer village witnessed a rise in the sales of stolen smartphones and fake accessories, hence, creating the unified database web portal became necessary - says CAPDAN.

Mr. Adeniyi Ojikutu, the CAPDAN President, said:
“In the event that a mobile phone was stolen and returned to the market for sale, the trader could quickly log on to the portal to verify if the phone was stolen. If verified that it was a stolen phone, the trader would quickly alert the real owner and the police would be invited for necessary prosecution,”

Furthermore, he added, “We are already using all means at our disposal to advise all customers to the Computer Village to always insist on registering their mobile phones with Fonreg, immediately they are purchased.”

Confirming the development, Mr. Ayo Thomas, the Chief Executive Officer, Fonreg, said that the portal would be unveiled this month (June) to create further awareness. According to him, traders at the market have welcomed the initiative. “Over 200 traders have already registered on the portal,” he said, adding that more awareness campaign would continue in order to bring all the traders on the web portal.

You can check the unified phone data base here Fonereg.com/eng/ng

Etisalat Debt Crisis: Central Bank of Nigeria Finally Steps in

Etisalat Nigeria is indebted to 10 consortium of banks the sum of over $1.2 billion, and the Manager of Central Bank of Nigeria, Mr Godwin Emefiele gave directives to the banks to stop pressuring the telcos.
Etisalat Debt Crisis: Central Bank of Nigeria Finally Steps in

A source revealed that CBN further said:
"Just like the NCC has warned that Etisalat’s license is not transferable, the leadership of the CBN from all indications will not allow any hostile takeover without its approval.

They (the banks) cannot do that by just taking a decision like that. Etisalat is not transferring any licence to any consortium of banks. We are going to resolve it amicably. The CBN and NCC are working towards resolving it amicably."

Reports from the source further stated that the banks revealed a lot of information during their presentation which include the fact that they had no intention of taking over Etisalat Nigeria, as had been widely rumoured.

The banks also felt that Emirates Telecommunications Group Company (Etisalat Group), Abu Dhabi, which holds a 45 percent stake in the Nigerian subsidiary, had announced on Tuesday at the Abu Dhabi Stock Exchange of its intention to pull out from its Nigerian operations without meeting its obligations which amounted to abandoning the company’s monumental obligations in Nigeria which include:
$1.2 billion syndicated and bilateral loans approved by 13 Nigerian banks, now delinquent;
Taxes and levies due to the Federal Government of Nigeria and regulatory agencies; and
Other third-party creditors (i.e. Vendors, service providers and contractors);

The banks (which are; Zenith Bank, GT Bank, First Bank, UBA, Fidelity Bank, Access Bank, Ecobank, FCMB, Stanbic IBTC Bank and Union Bank) also gave information to the CBN that while other network operators sold their towers and utilized the entire sales proceeds to repay their loans, Etisalat Nigeria in 2014 sold its towers but did not apply the sales proceeds to repay its loan. To investigate the management of Etisalat Nigeria over the utilization of the $1.2 billion facilities, the banks are also seeking the federal government’s intervention.

Etisalat, in response blamed the economic downturn witnessed in the country in 2015 and the sharp devaluations of the Naira for its inability to offset its $1.2b loan. It was also reported that Etisalat Nigeria has paid over 40% of the actual loan ofj $1.2 billion.“The actual outstanding on the Etisalat loan is about $500 million (N165 billion).”

The company also disclosed that it was not being investigated by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) as widely reported in the media.

You May Not Buy SecondHand Phones Again After Reading This

Buyers of secondhand phones, which a lot of people - majority from the east - call "belgium phones" are classified into two groups; (1) the lucky and (2) the unlucky. Apart from 2nd hand devices being unbelievably cheap and few in good conditions which some lucky buyers pounce on, the unlucky fellows might get a bitter treat.
You May Not Buy SecondHand Phones Again After Reading This

I've been an unlucky belgium phone buyer, not once, but twice. Some years back, I bought a second hand BlackBerry bold 5. After some days I discovered that memory cards don't work, the camera didn't work and touchscreen is misbehaving! literarily, that BB phone was condenmed & certified doomed. And after doing repairs, I discovered that the money I spent on repairs was more than the amount I bought the phone.

Why do you think people sell their old phones?
1. Urgent need of cash
2. Need to upgrade
3. They have too much phones.
4. The phone is faulty.

The fourth reason is more common. A friend of mine noticed her phone was abnormally freezing & hanging every now and then. Immediately, she put the phone up for sale - and at a cheap price too. Good for her, she sold it. Bad for the buyer who returned two weeks later lamenting the headache the frequent hanging of the phone gives him! "My dear, since i was using this phone, i haven't experienced any freezing" - she blatantly denied.

Why You Shouldn't Patronise Belgium Devices

1. Theft: A rainy night in delta state, thieves gained entrance into this guy's house - took his money & phones! Once they unlock the phones, what next? Sell it. You might be using a stolen phone and you don't know, you might be arrested and you won't know.

2. No Guarantee, No Warranty: Secondhand phone buyers don't have any guarantee that what they want to buy is in good condition. Neither do they have warranty incase of damages! Once you buy, you bye!

3. You May Spend More on Repairs: After discovering numbers of faults, or you decide to repackage the phone (buy earphone, change casing, screen guard etc) the money you'll spend on repairs & repackaging may be more than the amount you bought the phone. But when you buy new and unused phones, warranty will speak for you!

4. No Receipt: Nowadays, highway search police asks for receipt of ordinary earphones, talkless of phones. Since secondhand sellers don't issue receipts, it might be a problem if you're called upon to provide evidence of ownership of the phone.

5. No Freebies/ Gifts: Unlike some new phones which may come with free memory cards, powerbanks, selfie stick etc. Secondhand items has no provision for that. The highest they can offer is free earphone!

6. Waste of Money: For the extremely unlucky secondhand phone buyers who buys phones which has been certified dead - infact buried, - you get this depression & pain inside of you, telling you everyday that "bros, you just waisted your money o"

Though a lot of people are lucky to buy very good & cheap secondhand phone, it is advisable to do use these tips incase you want to buy one:
  • Know the seller very well - infact, know his/her house
  • Tell the seller to give you 3 days or more to test the phone before completing payments.
  • Spy, ask questions from the seller's friends about the phone before even talking of buying it
  • Bring your memory card, earphone, simcard, charger etc along to test on the phone

Buying secondhand items from stores or online is riskier than buyer from individual. Hope you found this post helpful, kindly share your experience on secondhand phones by commenting below.

Access Bank Takes Over Management of Etisalat NG Over N541 Billion Debt

A number of banks (Zenith Bank, GT Bank, First Bank, UBA, Fidelity Bank, Access Bank, Ecobank, FCMB, Stanbic IBTC Bank and Union Bank), led by Access Bank PLC and other Nigerian and foreign banks, has taken over the management of Etisalat Nigeria, with effect since June 15, for inability to pay up N541 billion debt.
Access Bank Takes Over Management of Etisalat NG Over N541 Billion Debt

The takeover came as a result of the unsucessful effort by Emerging Markets Telecommunications Services, EMTS, promoted by-one time Chairman, United Bank for Africa, UBA, Hakeem Bello-Osagie, to reach agreement with the banks on debt restructuring plan in the prolonged $1.72 billion (about N541.8 billion) debt.

However, June 23 is the deadline for EMTS Holding BV to complete the transfer of 100 percent of the company’s shares in Etisalat to the United Capital Trustees Limited, the legal representative of the consortium of banks.

Etisalat Group, which is the parent company of Etisalat Nigeria, announced the shift in management on Tuesday in a filing dated June 20, 2017, to the Abu Dhabi Securities Exchange in Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirate. With reference number Ho/GCFO/152/85, the filling signed by Etisalat Group Chief Financial Officer, Serkan Okandan, said efforts by EMTS to restructure the repayment of the syndicated loan by a consortium of banks to Etisalat Nigeria collapsed.

“Further to our announcement dated 12 February, 2017, Emirates Telecommunications Group Company PJSC, “Etisalat Group” would like to inform you that Emerging Markets Telecommunications Services Limited “EMTS” (“the company), established in Nigeria and an associate of Etisalat Group with effective ownership of 45% and 25% ordinary and preference shares respectively, defaulted on a facility agreement with a syndicate of Nigerian banks (“EMTS Lenders”).
- he added.

“On June 9 2017, the Company accordingly received a default and security Enforcement Notice, requesting EMTS Holding BV (EMTS BV) established in the Netherlands, and through which Etisalat Group holds its interest in the company) requiring EMTS BV to transfer 100% of its shares in the company to the United Capital Trustees Limited (the Security Trustee”) of the EMTS Lenders by 15 June 2017.

“Subsequently the EMTS Lenders extended the deadline for the share transfer to 5.00 pm Lagos time on 23 June 2017,” the filing said.

Since 2016, Etisalat has been under pressure following the demand notice for the recovery of a $1.72 billion (about N541.8 billion) loan facility it obtained from a consortium of banks in 2015. The loan, which involved a foreign-backed guaranty bond, was for the mobile telephone operator to finance a major network rehabilitation and expansion of its operational base in Nigeria.

Unfortunately, the consortium (prodded by their foreign partners) threatened to take over the company and its assets across the country for inability to meet its debt servicing obligations agreed since 2016. But the intervention Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC), and its financial sector counterpart, the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN), persuaded the banks to reassess their threat and give Etisalat a chance to renegotiate the loan’s repayment schedule.

6 Reasons You Should Buy Phones From Unpopular Brands

So many smartphones are out in the market, but most people tend to go for the famous brands not knowing that unpopular phone brands has certain advantages over the former. Lack of popularity doesn't mean lack of quality. So i'm here with 6 Reason you should go for unpopular brands.
6 Reasons You Should Buy Phones From Unpopular Brands

1. Unpopular Brands Are Cheaper:
You can testify that unpopular brands are pocket friendly and cheap to acquire. In my list of 16 amazing phones below #20000, unfamous brands dominated by almost 90%. They offer the same specs with the overhyped brands, and still offer less in terms of cost, thereby giving you good value for your money. You can imagine if tecno or infinix will sell leagoo m8 pro for 32k if they were the manufacturer.

2. Provision For Certain Accessories
So many unpopular brands includes free memory cards, power banks, OTG, pouch etc in their products. At a time, popular Android devices once had these but increase in demand made them stop providing these accompaniments. Imagine Tecno DroiPad 7D has no earphones!!

3. They Help Prevent Consumer Exploitation
These unpopular brands acts as agents that prevent popular brands from weilding some kind of Monopoly power. They help to prevent popular brands from further increase in prices of phones.

4. Lower Chances Of Fake Products
When compared to popular brands, unpopular brands have lower faked versions of their devices. Infinix is a big example, all her products have been remixed and counterfeited.

5. Longer Warranty Period
Unpopular brands tend to offer a longer period of time as warranty period, although this is not applicable to brands.

6. Constant Improvment
The specs of a new device from an unpopular brand will always be better than the former ones. This stems from the fact that they are learning from the big brands, correcting previous errors and uttermostly trying to impress their customers.

However, before going for a product from an unpopular brand, read reviews, do findings and ask questions from their past users. This will help alot in making the best choice.
