Twitter is well known as a social networking service where users post and interact with messages (tweets), restricted to 140 characters. But for the first time, Twitter is set to change its character limit.
Twitter announced on Tuesday that for some of its users, the character count for tweets will be doubled from 140 to 280 characters. The test group will include those who tweet in certain languages, including English, Spanish and Portuguese.
Recall earlier this year that Twitter removed user handles --a person's Twitter name preceded by the @ sign-- from replies to tweets, instead linking them in text above the tweet. This move hinted that Twitter cofounder and CEO, Jack Dorsey has his mind set on expanding the character limit before.
The decision to limit the tweet character to 140 stems from text messaging. SMS messages are capped at 160 characters before they're split in two texts. Dorsey has said founders wanted tweets to be able to fit in a text message: 140 characters for the tweet, and 20 characters for the username.
The company says it hopes people will embrace the new character limit change. But this may likely cause some backlash, considering the move deviates from its core design and tradition.
